The park was saved from development by historian Robert A. Hodge, who began using the property as an outdoor laboratory for his biology students in the 1950s.

The Shannon Air Museum is one of the most popular attractions in Fredericksburg and is well worth visiting. This museum has one of the world’s rarest collections of vintage aircraft and artifacts from aviation’s early days.
This collection includes the Vultee V-1A, and several artifacts from Eastern Airlines, of which Sidney Shannon Sr, and Eddie Rickenbacker were founders.
While the museum is not large, it’s still a must-see attraction for airplane history lovers. You’ll find a lot of interesting displays and great staff to answer your questions. They also offer flight simulators, a play area for kids, and an impressive gift shop.
